The Daily Herald in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. is having a week-long celebration to commemorate its 100-year anniversary.

All week customers can come to the lobby of the Herald and get free refreshments and cookies. People can sign up for tours of the facility and will be able to see the press run.

On Tuesday the Herald had an Employee Day to recognize the contributions of its employees, according to Titus Workman, publisher at The Daily Herald. All employees wore eye-catching blue 100 year anniversary T-shirts and enjoyed a cookout of hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch.

The really big celebration is the Open House and Chamber Business After-Hours event taking place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. There will be catered food, a huge birthday cake and music by local guitarist Chad Reed. Old archived issues of the newspaper will also be available for people to view. Workman also said they plan to have a ceremonial ribbon-cutting with the mayor and Wick Communications owner Robert Wick and Wick CEO Tom Yunt will attend.

A time capsule will be buried with various items that reflect the history of the newspaper as well as others that provide a record of the centennial celebration.  Workman also said Thursday’s newspaper will feature a special commemorative section, which will offer the history of the Herald, some historic front pages, information on the time capsule and comments from previous publishers at the Herald.
