Proud to be an American
Wednesday, 01 September 2010
Scott Green, with wife Cheryl, shows off his U.S. citizen certificate.
Wick Communications and Sierra Vista Herald Production Manager Scott Green officially became a U.S. citizen at 10:10 a.m. Aug. 27 at a ceremony in Tucson.
Scott said it was a good ceremony with 45 people being sworn in.
He also said the judge has been swearing in new citizens for 18 years and he had some wonderful things to say about the fact that the United States has been built by immigrants, of some kind, throughout history. The U.S. is the nation it is because of the contributions of its citizens, the judge said.
“I am proud to be an official part of that system and I do plan to participate and contribute to make the most of what I have been given. That is especially true for the opportunities Wick Communication has given me by standing with me and believing in me from the very start.” Scott said.
Originally from Canada, Scott came to the Herald and started work in February, 2002 as production manager.

New political sales team scores points in Arizona
Wednesday, 25 August 2010
Copper Group newspapers in southeastern Arizona have combined efforts to increase sales of political advertising.
Leading up to the August 24 primary election in Arizona, candidates had spent $13,500 in print advertising and $3,900 in web advertising, considerably more than in past years.
Tucson advertising director Jill A’Hearn is captain of the political sales team. Ad sales for the Democrats are handled by David White, while Alan Schultz handles sales agreements with the Republicans. They split assignments with the third party candidates and independents. Rebecca Rogers is handling research and marketing.
“We found that having the reps stick with one political party allowed them to build a better client base, and to work more efficiently,” A’Hearn said.
On the morning after the primary election, the team met to set strategy going into the November general election.
For more information on political teams, contact Jill A’Hearn at (520) 295-4236.

New managing editor in Roanoke Rapids
Monday, 02 August 2010
Stephen Hemelt
The Daily Herald in Roanoke Rapids has a new leader in its editorial department. Titus Workman, publisher of The Daily Herald, announced the hiring of Stephen Hemelt as managing editor, who will be responsible for the newspaper’s news operations and content.
Hemelt, 29, has been the associate managing editor of The Daily Iberian in New Iberia, La., and will begin his new job Aug. 23.
“Stephen is a seasoned veteran of the newspaper industry with strong editorial expertise and a solid record of performance,” Workman said. “We are pleased to have someone of Stephen’s expertise and background on our staff, as we strive to provide even better news coverage for readers of The Daily Herald.”
Hemelt, who will be relocating with his wife Candace, his two-year-old son Dominick and his two-month-old daughter Mallory, said coming to Roanoke Rapids earlier this year helped make his decision easier to pursue the job.
“I had the distinct pleasure of visiting Roanoke Rapids for one week earlier this year,” Hemelt explained. “It became obvious it would be a good place not just for me, but also for my family. I look forward to the opportunity to work, live and raise my family in the Roanoke Valley.
“It’s an 1,100-mile trip from my hometown, so I had some reservations,” Hemelt added. “But within days, I knew this was the kind of place I’d want to call home.”
As for the new job of managing editor, Hemelt is looking forward to putting out a newspaper the Valley will love to read.
“I want people to be excited to look in their news boxes,” Hemelt said, “and see what we’ve got to tell them.”
