U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Tucson, on May 5 gave a copy of the Tucson Weekly to Secretary Janet Napolitano, telling her that a story on April 29 on illegal immigration lays out the situation very well. She asked Napolitano, former governor of Arizona, to give the newspaper to President Obama. Reporter Leo Banks has covered the story in depth for the past few years, winning awards in the process. Daily News announces new editor
Wednesday, 05 May 2010
Veteran reporter and editor Richard Meek has joined The Daily News staff as managing editor.
Meek replaces Jacob Brooks, who transferred to another Wick Communications newspaper after three years in Washington Parish.
Meek brings 34 years experience to the position. He is a former sportswriter and slot editor for The Times-Picayune and also has served in various capacities from reporter to executive editor for papers in Toledo, Ohio, Indianapolis, Bay St. Louis, Miss., and Biloxi, Miss.
Most recently, he was special events fundraising manager at New Orleans City Park.
“I am excited and awed by the challenge awaiting me,” said Meek, a native of New Orleans. “I eagerly anticipating meeting the good people of Washington Parish.
“The Daily News has long been the source of news in the area, and I understand the responsibility of maintaining the high standards.”
General Manager Sandy Cunningham said Meek’s experience in all areas of the newsroom will be of great benefit to the community.
“He’s covered high school football, and he’s covered city council meetings. He’s covered small town police stories and local community events. He was involved in the Times-Picayune’s coverage following Hurricane Katrina, so he’s been on the front lines covering a major news event,” she said.
“Not only does Washington Parish offer a little bit of all of that to Richard, but Richard’s experiences in this business will be invaluable lessons for our editorial team as we keep parish residents abreast of the news happening around them.”
Bakke has same job, different title

Peter Bakke Director of Digital Media
We live in a time where the term “new media” is old hat. To better reflect the ever-evolving nature of technology, Wick Communication’s Peter Bakke has a new title: director of digital media. The change reflects the fact that the Internet has been around long enough to stop calling it ‘new.’ “In a couple of months, even the iPad will be old news,” Bakke said.
