Reporter – Pierre, SD

capitaljournal The Capital Journal

The Capital Journal, a daily Monday through Friday morning paper, is looking for a top notch reporter to work with our six-person newsroom. We are located along the Missouri River in the outdoor paradise of Pierre, South Dakota, the state’s capital city.

This position includes opportunities to cover a variety of beats including both state and local government. The ideal candidate will have excellent grammar and English skills, a knowledge of Associated Press style, headline writing and be willing to learn the ins and outs of photography.

The Capital Journal is a small daily with big ambitions and we’re looking for reporters who want the chance to grow and aren’t afraid to take on challenging assignments. We are working hard to change the way local news is thought of and covered.

Every Friday we print a section called Dakota Life that includes a long-form story, which takes a deep look at what makes our community what it is. In Dakota Life, we’ve covered everything from South Dakota’s first serial killer to prairie wildflowers.

We’ve recently started a new section called Savor that covers our local food, booze and music scenes.

The Capital Journal firmly believes that outdoor pursuits such as hunting and fishing are a fundamental piece of our community, and, as such, they are a big part of our news coverage. We also publish a magazine squarely focused on the outdoors.

Successful candidates will have a passion for good, local journalism, experience in the field and knowledge of newspaper design. College newspaper experience counts.

Please send cover letter, resume, salary requirements, references and four samples of your writing to Managing Editor Nick Lowrey at nick.lowrey@capjournal.com.
