And Bingo Was His Name-O
The Press in Anchorage, Alaska, is proud to announce its first-ever new publisher.
Bingo Barnes most recently spent five years as co-publisher of the Boise Weekly, the alternative newsweekly in Idaho’s capital and largest city,
"I'm looking forward to moving to Alaska and will do my best to not act like a cheechako,” says Barnes.
He’ll assume his duties in Anchorage in mid-June. Barnes takes over the position vacated by Founding Publisher Nick Coltman earlier this spring.
"I am looking forward to working with Bingo. I feel fortunate that we were able to hire a person with the skills and experience he brings,” says Kari Sleight, Senior Publisher for Alaska Operations for the Press’s parent company, Arizona-based Wick Communications.
"I am confident Bingo's experience as the owner/publisher of the Boise Weekly, along with his creative and marketing background, will serve the Press well as we continue to grow our publication,” says Sleight.
Before his stint in Boise, Barnes was Creative Director for two years at Greenspun Media Group in Las Vegas, which included the alternative Las Vegas Weekly. He’s also worked as Creative and Marketing Director for College Sports Communications in Dallas and as Art Director for Spirits and Cocktails Magazine.
Barnes is just as excited to start at the Press.
"After owning and running my own alternative paper in Boise I believe the lessons I learned there can be brought to Anchorage readers,” he says “I'm excited to begin working with the staff of the Press to take the paper to the next level. As for Alaska, our fearless new leader has this to say: "Who said Alaska is more expensive? When I visited Anchorage last week I noticed that gas and alcohol were cheaper than in Boise. With no sales tax I'm beginning to love it already."
In addition to the chance to work for the Press, Barnes says Alaska’s climate was a big draw.
"With global warming rapidly heating up the lower 48 I figured it was time to move north."
(The Press staff vows to remind him of this around January or so.)
