The Montrose Daily Press receives 14 awards from the Colorado Associated Press

The Montrose Daily Press received 14 awards from the Colorado Associated Press during its annual awards dinner Friday evening. The annual CAPER Awards are given by the AP bureau chief, Jim Clarke. Judges for the AP competition are Associated Press editors and bureau chiefs from Pennsylvania.

The Daily Press’ Colorado Associated Press award winners included:

• First place, editorial writing: Katharhynn Heidelberg, Bill Swaim, Stephen Woody. This included editorials on the ongoing turmoil in Olathe; the attempted recall of Montrose County Commissioner Bill Patterson; and the funeral of U.S. Army Cpl. Chris Sitton, who was killed in Afghanistan at the age of 21. The judges said the editorial on Sitton stood out above the rest in this category.

• First place, investigative reporting, Robert Allen. (Town in Turmoil.)
“Reporter Allen developed an enterprise reporting piece about the Olathe government and how resignations at Town Hall, for a variety of reasons, had compromised Olathe government.”

• Second place, General Excellence, Montrose Daily Press staff. Judges awarded the Daily Press for its overall design, photography and reporting. The Daily Press finished first in this category last year as Colorado's Best Small Daily (circulation under 10,000).
• Second place, Online: Breaking News, Montrose Daily Press staff.
• Second place, photo illustration, Barton Glasser, (Online romance).

• Honorable mention, Beat Reporting , Katharhynn Heidelberg, Ongoing Coverage of Montrose County.
• Honorable mention, Feature Story, Maggie Stehr, ‘With a Promise and a Prayer.’
• Honorable mention, Investigative Reporting, Katharhynn Heidelberg, ‘Recall.’
• Honorable mention, General News Photo, Barton Glassser, The Chris Sitton Funeral.
• Honorable mention, Online Special Package, Barton Glasser, Dealing with Suicide.
• Honorable mention, Photo Illustration, Barton Glasser, ‘Cash Crops.’
• Honorable mention, Picture Story/Photo Essay: William Woody, ‘La Mission Curativa.’
• Honorable mention, Enterprise Reporting/Series: Robert Allen, William Woody, ‘La Mision Curativa.’ Allen and Woody traveled to Baja, Mexico last April with Montrose-area health professionals as they provided free health care to residents there. Part of Samaritan Aviation.
