Montrose Daily Press ‘Seasons Readings’ Program

Becky Bjork

The Montrose Daily Press annually sponsors its ‘Seasons Readings’ program. Citizens are asked to donate slightly used books that their children or grandchildren have grown out of, or books stashed away in boxes, garages and attics. The books are colleted over a 3-week period at various dropoff points in Montrose and Olathe. The books are collected by members of the Montrose Altrusa Club, gift wrapped, and then taken to the Montrose County Health and Human Services department for distribution the week of Christmas for the underserved citizens of the county. It is part of the Press’ and Altrusa’s literacy project. This is the 25th season. Daily Press publisher Stephen Woody started the program in Roanoke Rapids in 1986 and brought it to Montrose in 1997 where it, too, has flourished. Between 2,500 and 3,000 books are donated and distributed. In the photo above, members of the Montrose Altrusa Club gift wrap the books on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Montrose Regional Library.
