Brian Peterson named new managing editor of Capital Journal

PIERRE — Brian Peterson is the new managing editor at the Capital Journal.

Peterson comes to Pierre from central Minnesota, where he was the outdoors/features/design editor at the Brainerd Dispatch.

A Minnesota native and University of North Dakota graduate, Peterson has mostly worked in sports, natural resources and design at publications across the country. Stops along the way in a 27-year career have included night sports editor at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, sports editor at the Fargo (N.D.) Forum, associate editor at Golfweek magazine in Orlando, Fla., sports/outdoors editor at the St. Augustine (Fla.) Record, assistant sports editor at the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press/USA Today and sports writer/designer at the Minot (N.D.) Daily News.  He also was the presentation editor at the Bismarck (N.D.) Tribune and a designer at the Durango (Colo.) Herald.

An avid outdoorsman who hopes to tap into the Pierre area’s vast natural resources scene, Peterson enjoys most everything outdoors, most notably fishing, biking, hiking and golfing. He also hopes to find time to train his golden retriever and to enjoy the Pierre area’s world-class pheasant hunting experience.

“Sometimes you have to put in a little extra time and effort to find just the right person,” said departing interim managing editor Mike Bailey. “Steve (Baker, publisher) was willing to do that and he has been rewarded with a guy who knows the business inside out. Brian is exactly the right person for the Capital Journal. He will continue to develop the staff and he and Steve have some pretty impressive plans for expansion and improvement.”

“We are thrilled to have Brian onboard. His experience and talents match what we need to provide a good community newspaper,” said Steve Baker, Capital Journal publisher. “Brian brings us a wealth of experience in all aspects of journalism. He will continue to capitalize on the recent improvements in the Capital Journal and help us complete the aggressive expansion of our influence.”
