Daily News scores eight first place wins from NDNA

Daily News Publisher Tara Klostreich received a special honor during the weekend of Friday, May 3 in Mandan, North Dakota. Klostreich was nominated to the North Dakota Newspaper Association board during the festivities of the annual NDNA convention.

Klostreich, attending with General Manager Diana Hermes, accepted the eight first place awards given to the Daily News. A grand total of 21 reporting and photography and 19 advertising awards received by the Daily News and its sister paper, the News Monitor.

“I am honored to have been nominated to the NDNA board,” Klostreich said after the convention. “I look forward to serving with the amazing directors. I can’t wait to see what 2024 brings.”

Awards for the Daily News include the third place 2023 General Excellence award for small multi-day newspapers. The News Monitor received the same award in the field of small weekly newspapers.

The Daily News earned third place for overall design excellence in its field. Awards received also included:

• honorable mentions for health, “The Clinic for Oral Health,” by Lynzee Hagemeister, outdoor and sports, “3 Borders Sports,” by Hermes, and community promo advertising, “Citizen of the Year,” by Production Manager Candace Engstrom

• honorable mention for the special advertising section, “Southern Valley Living — Winter,” by the team of Hermes, Engstrom and Hagemeister

• honorable mention for personal column — humorous, “Saying something different — or finally saying something,” by current Managing Editor Frank Stanko

• third place for spot news, “Breckenridge man injured when crane tips over,” by James Vissers

• third place wins for feature, “A fall festival fit for Wahpeton,” outdoor recreation, “Play Park’s visit inspires tales of modern Chahinkapa Zoo” and portrait, “Butterflies take flight in show of mourning, support,” photos, all taken by Stanko

• third place for the feature reporting series, “Heart of the Southern Valley,” by Stanko

• third place wins for financial, “Beyer Insurance Agency,” and community promo advertising, “Chalkfest,” both by Hermes

• second place for promo of newspaper readership advertising, “Subscribe Today,” by Hermes

• second place for the special advertising section, “Profile 2023,” by the team of Hermes, Engstrom, Ashleigh Jorschumb and Sammy Babcock

• second place for the special news section, “Southern Valley Living — Winter,” by the team of Engstrom, Stanko, Jake Holley, Vissers and Robert Wanek Jr.

• second place for the government reporting series, “Response to 68th North Dakota Legislature,” by Stanko

• first place for entertainment and/or liquor advertising, “Make-A-Wish,” by Hermes

• first place for sports photo, “Never a doubt,” taken by Wanek

• first place for sports feature, “Lipp Lifestyle,” by Wanek

• first place for best use of social media, “‘Boys of Summer’ — American Legion Baseball Documentary,” by Wanek, Madison Nelson-Gira and Noah Clooten

• first place for section and feature front design, by Engstrom

• first place for special news section, “Profile 2023,” by the team of Engstrom, Stanko, Carrie McDermott, Wanek, Colton Rasanen and Levi Jones

• first place for online coverage of breaking news, “Monday’s homicide in Wahpeton: what we know so far,” by Stanko

• first place for reporting, “‘Justice for Washington’ protest peaceful in Wahpeton,” by Stanko

“Thorough, balanced (and including the proper) amount of background,” NDNA declared about the protest article. “It took courage to report this in an era when people don’t want to face the fact that race will always be an issue in the U.S.”
