Christian Ramirez, web developer for Wick Communications, has been selected to participate in the Inland Fellowship Program, an initiative to support diversity in newspaper leadership.

Ramirez, who graduated from the Art Center Design College of Tucson in 2008, started with the company in 2001 as a freelancer. He worked in web development at the Nogales International, a Wick Communications newspaper, and was later hired by Wick Communications at the corporate level.

Ramirez will travel to Chicago in October to attend the 125th annual meeting of the Inland Press Association, where he will be recognized as a fellow, meet two mentors and participate in intense training in the newspaper industry. In addition to mentoring, his sponsors will provide feedback on reports, presentations and other activities.

My involvement at a more technical level has afforded me the opportunity to explore almost every facet of the newspaper operation, from circulation to editorial and advertising, Ramirez said. I find the newspaper business fast-paced and fascinating. Every day is a learning experience. I am very grateful to have been selected by Inland as a fellow.

Ramirez was one of three applicants who were selected for the program by a committee of Inland members. They were chosen based on current job performance; other work-related skills and experience; commitment to a career in newspapers; academic information; quality of clips and other work samples; references; special talents and life experiences; and personal interviews.

Christian is a terrific candidate for the three-year Inland Fellowship program. I like the idea of the fellowship being mentored, said Peter Bakke, Ramirez's supervisor and director of Digital Media for Wick Communications. This experience will give Christian additional leadership skills and a broader picture of the newspaper industry.
