The Daily News won 34 awards at the Louisiana Press Association convention this past weekend in Marskville, including the prestigious Advertising Sweepstakes Award.

Advertising graphic designer Kim Gerald won eight first place awards, which helped land The Daily News the Sweepstakes Award.

The editorial section won six first place awards, including general manager Richard Meek being awarded the Sam Hanna Award for column writing.

Gerald won first-place awards for black and white and color ads, best ad campaign, advertising idea, best non-traditional use of ad space, multiple advertiser page and the sweepstakes.

Staff writer Marcelle Hanemann and Meek shared a first-place award for the paper’s coverage of the Timothy Alford manhunt this past summer. Hanemann also won a second place award for a continuing series she wrote on civil rights leader Robert Hicks, who died in 2010.

The paper’s editorial page was noted as best in its class, and the staff won first and second place awards for editorial writing.

The paper’s special section on the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina also received a first place award.
Lifestyles editor Jan Gibson received a second place award for Best Lifestyle Coverage. Meek also received second place wards in the categories of Best News Story and Best Investigative Report.

Gerald received six second place awards.

Overall, the editorial department won a total of 15 awards and advertising 19 awards.

“These are tangible accomplishments that as a staff we certainly look at with pride,” Meek said. “But our primary mission continues to be serving the readers of Washington Parish. Ultimately, they are our true judges.”
